About Me

Reading glass for the pocket

I don't need glasses all the time, but as I'm getting older I do find it harder read fine print. I like to carry reading glasses so that I don't get stuck when I'm out and about, but I don't want to always carry a bulky glasses case. I like to try and find reading glasses that are compact and can easily be carried in the pocket and are pretty hardy so they don't get too scratched up. This blog is all about affordable options for pocket reading glasses to keep you able to read all those tiny fonts and prints.

Refractive Eye Errors and the Corrective Surgeries You Need

by Peetu Huotari

Vision problems are a pain for anyone regardless of their gender or age. They impede your quality of life and remove the comfort in doing some routine activities such as working on a computer, reading and using a mobile phone. Some people resort to temporary solutions like covering their screens with dimming accessories, but that does not solve the problem. You need corrective procedures that will help your eyes recover and improve the quality of your life. In this piece, the focus is on refractive eye errors and the corrective measures you need.

Refractive Errors Explained

Eyesight physically depends on three things. These are the retina, the cornea and the lens. The lens and the cornea must focus rays of light on the retina for you to see an object exactly as it is. The retina, being a light-sensitive organ, generates impulses and sends them to the brain so that you can make sense of what you are seeing. Your retina can only achieve this if the incoming light rays bend appropriately and focus on the retina. Sometimes, this does not happen because of a badly shaped cornea that causes a refractive error.

Refractive Errors Sampled

The underlying problem of refractive errors is poor refraction of light before it hits the light-sensitive area of your eye. However, the refractive errors fall into several categories depending on their intensity and the way they affect your vision. These categories include the following:

Astigmatism – you cannot see objects clearly regardless of the distance in question. If you have an astigmatism, the shape of your lens and cornea cannot focus images sharply on your retina.

Myopia – myopia also goes by the name nearsightedness. Objects close to you are sharp and clear. However, you struggle to get a clear view of objects at a distance. They appeared blurred. Here, your eye is longer from the front side to the rear side. It could be a result of excess curving on the cornea.

Refractive Errors Corrected

Correcting refractive errors requires surgical procedures. These procedures include the following:

Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) – LASIK is a popular surgical procedure used to rectify refractive eye problems such as astigmatism. The procedure uses an excimer laser to alter the shape of your cornea and enable the proper focus of incoming light rays.

Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) – RLE involves making a small cut to extract the lens in your eye. The practitioner replaces the lens with a suitable plastic or silicon lens that refracts light beams well. RLE corrects conditions like myopia.
